Anglesey Abbey is a 12th-century priory turned family country house, set in 114 acres of celebrated gardens just north-east of Cambridge. The gardens are the reason most people visit, and the property is best known for its astonishing winter season — snowdrops carpeting the ground in January and February, then dogwoods and silver-birch trunks lighting up the famous Winter Walk. There’s also a fully-working watermill, Lode Mill, that grinds flour for sale on selected weekends.

What to expect on a family visit
A two- to three-hour visit covers the Winter Walk, Lode Mill and the main gardens comfortably. The house itself is small and quiet — the gardens are the headline. Best time of year to come is late January through to mid-March, when the snowdrops are at their peak and the Winter Walk’s planting is doing what it was designed for. The mill is worth timing your visit around — check the website before you go to see if it’s grinding the day you’re there. The Wildflower Meadow (summer) and Hyacinth Garden (April) extend the season for a return visit.
