Botallack is the most photographed industrial ruin in Britain — the two Crowns engine houses perched on a granite ledge above the Atlantic, the cliffs honeycombed with shafts that ran out under the seabed for more than half a mile. The site is properly free to walk, NT-managed, and was the headline filming location for the BBC’s Poldark — the engine houses appear in the title sequences of every series.

What to expect on a family visit
Plan for one to two hours. Free to visit and free to park (small car park; arrive early in summer). The walk down to the Crowns is short but the path is rough — sturdy shoes essential, not pushchair-suitable right out to the cliff edge. The NT visitor centre at the Count House is worth a look (small, free). Combines with Levant (15 minutes north) and Cape Cornwall.
