Cotehele is the Edgcumbe family’s medieval-into-Tudor house high above the Tamar river, with the unusual feature that the whole estate runs all the way down to the river itself — a quay, a working water mill, the restored Tamar barge Shamrock, and a Discovery Centre telling the story of the river trade. It’s three or four good visits in one and works for very different family configurations.

What to expect on a family visit
A full day. The house is properly atmospheric (no electric light in many rooms — bring your eyes’ best efforts). The walk down to Cotehele Quay is a steep mile and worth the effort — the Edgcumbe Arms (independent, NT-adjacent) does lunches on the quay. The Mother Christmas / Garland exhibition in the great hall every November-January is the family-tradition draw.
