East Pool Mine, on the A30 between Camborne and Redruth, is the third great Cornish-mining NT site (with Levant and Botallack) — and the easiest one to visit if you only have a couple of hours. It has two enormous preserved beam engines, one of which is in steam on selected days; the smaller engine, a Mitchell’s whim, demonstrates the haulage of ore up the shaft.

What to expect on a family visit
An hour and a half is plenty. Open select days through the season; engines are operated by volunteers and the in-steam programme is published a season in advance. The site is small, indoor, easily accessible. Pairs naturally with Levant (45 minutes west) for a proper mining day, or as a stop on the drive between Truro and Penzance.
