The Eden Project is the global education charity built in a former china-clay pit near St Austell — two enormous geodesic biomes housing the world’s largest indoor rainforest and the Mediterranean climates of California, South Africa and the Med, surrounded by 30 acres of outdoor gardens. It’s a genuinely impressive piece of engineering and one of the most well-thought-out family days out in the south-west.

What to expect on a family visit
Plan for a full day. The Rainforest Biome is properly hot and humid (35°C+) — wear layers and bring water. SkyWire (zip wire across the site, ages 8+) and Hangloose the giant swing are extra-paid; pre-book online. The on-site café and restaurant are good. Pre-booking saves on the gate price and is essential in school holidays. Open year-round.
