Framlingham Castle is the 12th-century stone fortress that sits on the hill above Framlingham town — and the place Mary Tudor declared herself queen in 1553. The wall walk along the curtain ramparts is the highlight, with views across the meadows to the mere; the village below is a genuinely good Suffolk town with a proper market square. Ed Sheeran, who grew up here, made the place internationally famous with his song Castle on the Hill — the castle is, accordingly, full of references.

What to expect on a family visit
Allow two hours for the castle (longer if you walk the entire ramparts). The site has a small café and shop; the village a five-minute walk away has the Crown & Anchor for a proper pub lunch and the Dancing Goat for coffee. English Heritage members get free entry; non-members pay the standard rate. Pushchair access is partial — the wall walk is steps-only.
