Geevor is one of the largest preserved tin mines in Europe — the working operation closed in 1990 after eight centuries of Cornish tin mining, and the site has since been preserved essentially as it was on closing day. The headline experience is the Wheal Mexico underground tour, where you walk through an 18th-century tin lode following the original miners’ tracks. Above ground, the Hard Rock museum is the best telling of the Cornish-mining story anywhere.

What to expect on a family visit
Plan for a full day. The underground tour is short (15 minutes) but mildly atmospheric — not for the very claustrophobic, but fine for primary-age children. The above-ground site takes two-to-three hours easily. The on-site café (the Mine Shaft) is decent. Combines with Levant (NT, 5 minutes north) for a proper mining day.
