Godolphin is the quietest of the great Cornish estates — a Tudor manor house with one of the oldest known formal garden layouts in Britain (laid out in the 16th century and astonishingly intact), wrapped in 220 acres of working farmland and woodland walks that take in the Tin Coast engine houses on the cliffs to the south. Less polished than Cotehele, less famous than Lanhydrock — and all the better for it.

What to expect on a family visit
A relaxed half-day. The house opens on selected days only — check ahead. The estate walks are open every day of the year, free to members and ticketed for non-members. The Piggery Café in the old estate yard is small but excellent. Combines naturally with Penrose (15 minutes south) for a slow Cornish day.
