Helmingham Hall is the moated Tudor home of the Tollemache family — the same family for nearly 500 years — set in 400 acres of deer park west of Woodbridge. The house itself opens rarely; what visitors come for is the gardens, which are exceptional: a walled rose garden (the historic ‘Rose Garden of England’), an Elizabethan knot garden, and a herbaceous walk that runs the length of the moat.

What to expect on a family visit
Two to three hours. Open select afternoons through the summer (typically Wednesdays and Sundays from May to September) — check the website before you set out. Tea-room on site; pushchair access partial. Best in mid-June through July when the roses and the herbaceous borders are at peak.
