Houghton Hall is the great Palladian house built for Sir Robert Walpole — Britain’s first prime minister — set in a thousand-acre West Norfolk deer park grazed by a famous herd of white fallow deer. The five-acre walled garden is one of the largest in the country, the contemporary sculpture programme regularly brings major artists to the estate, and the model-soldier collection in the Stables is a sleeper hit with children of all ages.

What to expect on a family visit
Allow a full afternoon. The Hall opens on selected days only (typically Wednesday through Sunday in season) — the gardens and parkland are open more often. Houghton’s contemporary sculpture exhibitions usually run over the summer and are properly serious — Anish Kapoor, Henry Moore, James Turrell have all featured. The white deer are visible year-round; younger children love the model-soldier rooms. The Stable Yard café is the one on-site option; Burnham Market is a 15-minute drive for lunch alternatives.

Houghton’s 2026 season opens for Tulips at Houghton from 11 April (Wed/Thu/Sat/Sun) and runs across the early-May bank holiday weekend. The full Hall, Lynn Chadwick exhibition and Sculpture Park open from Saturday 2 May 2026.
