Lanhydrock is the great late-Victorian country house just south of Bodmin — rebuilt after the original house burned in 1881 and now preserved as the most complete picture of Victorian below-stairs life in any National Trust property. The kitchen, scullery, dairy, bakehouse and servants’ bedrooms are all open. The 1,000-acre estate has waymarked cycle trails (bike hire on site) and works as easily for a serious bike-day as a house-and-tea-room visit.

What to expect on a family visit
Plan for a full day if you cycle. The house tour takes 90 minutes; the gardens another hour; the cycle trails are a proper afternoon. The Stableyard café is good for hot lunches; The Servants’ Hall for cream teas. Bike hire is at the main car park — pre-book in school holidays. One of the most pushchair-friendly NT houses anywhere — extensive lift/level access throughout.
