Northampton Shops Opening Times & Late Night Shopping

Northampton’s town-centre shopping is anchored by Grosvenor Shopping (the covered centre on the Market Square), with the surrounding pedestrianised streets and the great open Market Square completing the picture. The short answer on late-night shopping: the town centre keeps fairly conventional hours — Grosvenor and most high-street shops trade until 6pm Monday to Saturday and close earlier on a Sunday — so a true late evening means either the out-of-town stores at Sixfields and Weston Favell, which run later, or the extended hours that arrive in the run-up to Christmas. Below you’ll find the current opening and closing times, Sunday trading, the festive pattern and where to head if you genuinely need to shop after 6pm.

Northampton Shop Opening & Closing Times: Quick Reference

Grosvenor Shopping

Grosvenor Shopping is Northampton’s main covered centre, a short walk from the railway station and opening directly onto the Market Square. It houses Primark, Boots, Superdrug, H&M, JD Sports, River Island, Superdry, Office, Deichmann, Holland & Barrett, Pandora, Lush, Waterstones and The Entertainer, among more than fifty retailers across two levels. The covered layout is a real advantage in winter or wet weather.

The centre and most of its stores trade until 6pm Monday to Saturday, with a shorter Sunday window. There is no longer a fixed weekly late-night evening here — the longer hours come in December — so if you are coming after work, aim to arrive by mid-afternoon on an ordinary weekday.

Market Square and the High Street

Northampton’s Market Square is one of the largest historic market squares in the country and the natural heart of the town, recently reopened after a major restoration. The surrounding streets carry the independents, banks and high-street names, with Abington Street running east towards the museum and art gallery.

These shops generally close a little earlier than the centre — around 5.30pm to 6pm on weekdays — with the usual shorter Sunday hours. The square itself is handsomely lit after dark, and comes into its own during the market days and the winter Christmas events.

Northampton Shops on Sunday: Opening Hours

Sunday is the quietest and shortest shopping day in Northampton, but the main shops do open. Grosvenor Shopping trades 10.30am to 4.30pm on a Sunday, and most of its larger stores keep the same window. Because larger shops — those over 280 square metres — are limited to six hours’ trading on a Sunday under the Sunday Trading Act, you will not find the centre open all day: a late-morning to mid-afternoon visit is the sensible plan.

Smaller shops and convenience stores are free of the six-hour rule and can open longer. On the high street, expect roughly 11am to 5pm. If you need groceries earlier or later, the supermarkets are your friend: Tesco Extra at Weston Favell opens from mid-morning on a Sunday, and the M&S Foodhall at Sixfields keeps the standard 10.30am to 4.30pm Sunday window. For genuinely late or early hours, the smaller Tesco Express and similar convenience branches around the town run well beyond the centre’s times.

Where to Shop Later Than 6pm in Northampton

If you genuinely need to shop after the town centre closes, head out of town. The M&S Foodhall at Sixfields Retail Park trades until 8pm Monday to Saturday, and the Tesco Extra inside Weston Favell runs until midnight on weekdays — useful for groceries and household basics long after Grosvenor has shut. Both sit just off the main road network with free parking, so they suit an after-work run far better than the centre. Christmas & Boxing Day Shopping Hours 2026

December is when Northampton’s town-centre shopping genuinely stays open late. In the weeks before Christmas, Grosvenor Shopping and the larger high-street stores typically extend their evenings, and the festive market brings the Market Square alive after dark. Getting to Northampton

Northampton is well connected by rail and sits just off the M1, with good bus links from across the county.

By train

Northampton railway station is about a ten-minute walk from Grosvenor Shopping. Direct services run from London Euston in around an hour, plus Birmingham and Milton Keynes. Last trains towards London run until after 11pm on most evenings.

By car and parking

Grosvenor’s own multi-storey, plus the nearby Mayorhold and St John’s car parks, are the most convenient for the centre. For the out-of-town stores, Sixfields and Weston Favell both offer free parking. Evening tariffs apply in the town-centre car parks after 6pm.

Where to Eat and Drink in the Town Centre

Northampton’s places to eat and drink gather around St Giles Street and Bridge Street, both a few minutes’ walk from Grosvenor Shopping. St Giles Street is the prettier of the two, lined with independents, while Bridge Street runs down towards the station with a steady mix of bars and kitchens.

For a relaxed dinner before the drive home, The Lamplighter on Overstone Road is a well-regarded gastropub a short walk east of the centre. The independent scene turns over fairly often, so it is worth a quick check of current listings before you set out for a particular table.

Tips for an Evening Visit to Northampton

  • Aim for mid-afternoon on a weekday: the town centre closes at 6pm, so an after-work dash is tight — arrive by 4pm to shop properly.
  • Out of town runs later: M&S at Sixfields trades to 8pm and Tesco Extra at Weston Favell to midnight on weekdays — the genuine after-6pm options.
  • December is the late-night season: festive evenings, with the market and extended hours, are when the town centre stays open into the evening.
  • Train from London: the direct Euston service makes Northampton an easy day from north-west London or the West Midlands.
  • Bridge Street for dinner: the best concentration of evening restaurants is five minutes from Grosvenor Shopping.

What time do shops close in Northampton?

Grosvenor Shopping and most town-centre stores close at 6pm Monday to Saturday and at 4.30pm on a Sunday. High-street independents often close a little earlier, around 5.30pm. For later hours, M&S at Sixfields trades until 8pm and Tesco Extra at Weston Favell until midnight on weekdays.

Does Northampton have a weekly late-night shopping evening?

Not as a fixed weekly fixture any more. Grosvenor Shopping’s published hours run to 6pm Monday to Saturday, so there is no longer a regular town-centre late night. The exception is December, when the run-up to Christmas brings extended evening hours and the festive market.

Where can I shop after 6pm in Northampton?

Head out of town. The M&S Foodhall at Sixfields Retail Park is open until 8pm Monday to Saturday, and the Tesco Extra inside Weston Favell runs until midnight on weekdays. Both have free parking. In the town centre itself, after-6pm shopping is realistically limited to December’s festive evenings.

Yes. Grosvenor Shopping trades 10.30am to 4.30pm on a Sunday and most larger stores keep the same window, limited to six hours by the Sunday Trading Act. High-street shops are typically open 11am to 5pm, and supermarkets and convenience stores open longer.

Does Northampton have late-night shopping in December?

Yes. December is when town-centre late-night shopping really happens. In the weeks before Christmas, Grosvenor Shopping and the larger stores usually extend their evening hours, and the Market Square hosts a festive market. The exact December calendar is published nearer the time, so confirm before travelling.

Is it safe to shop in Northampton in the evening?

The central pedestrianised streets around Grosvenor Shopping, the Market Square and the high street are well lit, covered by CCTV and busy into the early evening, particularly around the restaurants on Bridge Street and St Giles Street.
