Levant is one of the most extraordinary industrial-archaeology sites in Britain — a UNESCO World Heritage tin and copper mine on the clifftops near Pendeen, and the only place in the world where you can see a Cornish beam engine in steam, in its original engine-house, doing the work it was built to do in the 1840s. The engine is fired up on selected days through the year and is genuinely thrilling — huge slow strokes, hot oil, the smell of coal.

What to expect on a family visit
Two to three hours. Check the in-steam days before you visit — the engine doesn’t run every day. The site sits on the Tin Coast and combines naturally with Botallack (a 15-minute clifftop walk south) or Geevor Tin Mine next door for a full mining day. Volunteers in engineering hard-hats run the engine; their commentary is one of the highlights.
