Norwich Castle is the Norman keep that has dominated the city skyline for nine hundred years. Following a major redevelopment, it reopened in 2025 with the Keep returned to its medieval form — visitors can now walk the Royal Palace experience inside the Keep itself, alongside the famous Anglo-Saxon & Viking gallery, the Egyptian collection and the Boudica gallery. It is one of Norfolk’s flagship rainy-day options for families with primary-age children and older.

What to expect on a family visit
Two to three hours covers the headline galleries and the Keep comfortably. The new Royal Palace floor is the must-see — it places you inside what the Keep would have been like as a working royal residence. Pre-booking is recommended for the Keep itself in busy periods; the wider museum galleries can be entered without a timed slot. The on-site café is small but central to the city — Norwich’s Royal Arcade is a two-minute walk for lunch alternatives.
