Orford Castle is one of England’s most architecturally unusual castles — the keep is polygonal rather than square or round, and it is the only surviving piece of Henry II’s coastal defence system on the Suffolk shore. Built in the 1160s, the three-storey keep is climbable to the roof, and the panoramic view from the top across the village square and out across the marshes to Orford Ness is one of the great Suffolk viewpoints.

What to expect on a family visit
Allow 90 minutes — small site, single building. The internal stairs are steep and narrow; not suitable for very small children carried in slings. Combine with the village (Pump Street Bakery, Pinneys oysters) and, if pre-booked, the Orford Ness ferry. EH members free; non-members modest entry fee.
