Penrose is 1,500 acres of woodland, parkland and beach a few minutes from Helston, wrapped around Loe Pool — England’s largest natural lake, separated from Mount’s Bay by the dramatic shingle bar of Loe Bar. It is properly good walking country, free to access (parking charges apply for non-members), and combines a long lakeside loop with the option of dropping down to Porthleven harbour for lunch.

What to expect on a family visit
A half-day to a full day depending on how far you walk. The full Loe Pool circuit is around 5 miles flat; shorter loops branch off. The Stables Café at Penrose is the on-site option; Porthleven is 10 minutes’ walk from the southern end of the estate and has more choice. Dog-friendly throughout the estate; lake itself is closed for swimming.
