Pensthorpe Natural Park is a 700-acre nature reserve on the River Wensum near Fakenham — the former home of BBC’s Springwatch — combining serious conservation work (red squirrels, corncrakes, wading birds) with a properly good family day-out offering. What to expect on a family visit
Allow a full day. The combination of WildRootz play, the wildlife trails and the lakes is enough for most family groups, and the on-site café is good. The park works in any weather — the indoor play barn is large enough to hide from a Norfolk downpour. Pre-booking online is recommended in school holidays and saves on the gate price. Bring binoculars; the lakeside hides give surprisingly good views of marsh-fringe species.
