Restormel Castle is the most architecturally satisfying castle in Cornwall — a near-perfect circular Norman keep on a wooded ridge above the Fowey valley near Lostwithiel. It is the property of the Duchy of Cornwall (King Charles III’s heritage estate) and managed by English Heritage. The keep’s inner walls, gatehouse and chapel are largely intact; you walk the ramparts and look across to the medieval town below.

What to expect on a family visit
An hour and a half. Small site, walkable in any weather. The wooded approach from the car park is short. EH members free; non-members modest ticket. Combines well with the medieval town of Lostwithiel for lunch and a riverside walk.
