Bridgewater is the RHS’s fifth and newest garden, opened in May 2021 on the site of Worsley New Hall — a Victorian estate Queen Victoria visited twice and that burned down in 1943, leaving 154 acres to sit largely derelict until the RHS took it on as one of the largest gardening projects in Europe.
What to see at RHS Garden Bridgewater
RHS Garden Bridgewater covers 154 acres, near Worsley, Salford. Four things worth building a visit around:
- The Weston Walled Garden — eleven acres, one of the largest Victorian walled kitchen gardens in the UK, growing edible plants at a scale that makes a domestic vegetable patch look sensible by comparison.
- The Paradise Garden — densely planted, sheltered and intended for slow wandering rather than a quick circuit.
- The Chinese Streamside Garden — a design lineage distinct from the rest of the site — worth seeking out rather than stumbling on.
- The Community Wellbeing Garden and native woodland — seven acres of woodland alongside a garden built with local health and wellbeing groups, reflecting Bridgewater’s brief as much a Salford community project as a show garden.
The history in brief
Worsley New Hall was built in 1840 for Francis Egerton, 1st Earl of Ellesmere, with grounds laid out by the Victorian landscape designer William Andrews Nesfield. Queen Victoria visited in 1851 and again in 1857. The hall was damaged by fire in 1943 and later demolished, and the grounds spent the rest of the 20th century as, variously, a garden centre, a rifle range and a Scout camping ground before the RHS began restoring them.
RHS membership
Entry to RHS Garden Bridgewater is free with RHS membership, along with the RHS’s four other gardens and free or discounted entry to 241 partner gardens across the UK. If you’d visit more than one or two RHS gardens a year, membership usually pays for itself on entry fees alone — and RHS membership currently has 30% off for new members (12 months for the price of 8), until 6 September 2026.
Practical visiting
RHS Garden Bridgewater is open most days of the year, with shorter hours over winter and closures on Christmas Day; book ahead in the school holidays and on RHS Members’ free days, when the car park fills early. There’s a café and plant centre on site. Current opening times, admission prices and any special events are worth checking on the RHS website before you set off — correct as of 16 August 2026, but these things do change with the season.
