Harlow Carr began as a trial ground for what would actually grow in northern England’s tougher conditions, and that practical streak — this is a garden that tells you what works, not just what looks nice in a photograph — is still its real appeal.
What to see at RHS Garden Harlow Carr
RHS Garden Harlow Carr covers 58 acres, near Harrogate. Four things worth building a visit around:
- The Streamside Garden — the largest of its kind in the country, built along a real stream rather than an artificial water feature — genuinely useful reference for anyone with damp ground of their own.
- The Kitchen Garden — productive planting that supplies the on-site café — a rare case of a show garden actually being put to work.
- The Alpine House and Sub-Tropicana Garden — two extremes side by side: tightly controlled alpine planting and an exuberant late-summer border of cannas and dahlias.
- Gardens Through Time — a walk through two centuries of British gardening history, including a contemporary plot designed by Diarmuid Gavin.
The history in brief
The Northern Horticultural Society was founded in 1946 specifically to test plants for northern conditions, and opened Harlow Carr Botanical Gardens on leased land in 1950. The RHS acquired the garden through its 2001 merger with the Society, inheriting both the site and its trial-ground purpose.
RHS membership
Entry to RHS Garden Harlow Carr is free with RHS membership, along with the RHS’s four other gardens and free or discounted entry to 241 partner gardens across the UK. If you’d visit more than one or two RHS gardens a year, membership usually pays for itself on entry fees alone — and RHS membership currently has 30% off for new members (12 months for the price of 8), until 6 September 2026.
Practical visiting
RHS Garden Harlow Carr is open most days of the year, with shorter hours over winter and closures on Christmas Day; book ahead in the school holidays and on RHS Members’ free days, when the car park fills early. There’s a café and plant centre on site. Current opening times, admission prices and any special events are worth checking on the RHS website before you set off — correct as of 16 August 2026, but these things do change with the season.
