Hyde Hall occupies a genuinely unusual position for an English garden: a windswept Essex hilltop near Chelmsford with panoramic views and, since the RHS took it on in 1993, some of the most forward-looking planting in its whole portfolio.
What to see at RHS Garden Hyde Hall
RHS Garden Hyde Hall covers 360 acres of garden and surrounding farmland, near Chelmsford. Four things worth building a visit around:
- The Dry Garden — planting designed to survive on rainfall alone once established — a genuinely useful demonstration for anyone gardening through increasingly unpredictable British summers, not just a design flourish.
- The Hilltop Garden — roses and herbaceous borders that make the most of the site’s one real asset: the view.
- The Global Growth Vegetable Garden — vegetables from growing traditions well beyond the standard British allotment, opened in 2017.
- The Winter Garden — opened in 2018 and built around an RHS trial of Cornus (dogwood) — worth the detour on a cold, clear day when most gardens have nothing to offer.
The history in brief
Dr and Mrs Robinson began gardening at Hyde Hall in 1955 on what was then a working farm, and a charitable trust maintained the site until the RHS was granted the garden in 1993. Its 360 acres — the largest of the five — still include working farmland around the cultivated core.
RHS membership
Entry to RHS Garden Hyde Hall is free with RHS membership, along with the RHS’s four other gardens and free or discounted entry to 241 partner gardens across the UK. If you’d visit more than one or two RHS gardens a year, membership usually pays for itself on entry fees alone — and RHS membership currently has 30% off for new members (12 months for the price of 8), until 6 September 2026.
Practical visiting
RHS Garden Hyde Hall is open most days of the year, with shorter hours over winter and closures on Christmas Day; book ahead in the school holidays and on RHS Members’ free days, when the car park fills early. There’s a café and plant centre on site. Current opening times, admission prices and any special events are worth checking on the RHS website before you set off — correct as of 16 August 2026, but these things do change with the season.
