Wisley is the RHS’s original garden and still its biggest draw — over a million visitors a year come to a 240-acre site near Woking that started life in 1878 as one Victorian businessman’s private experiment and has been growing, quite literally, ever since.
What to see at RHS Garden Wisley
RHS Garden Wisley covers 240 acres, 135 of them open to the public, near Woking. Four things worth building a visit around:
- The Glasshouse — the RHS’s largest, home to more than 5,000 different tropical, temperate and dry-climate plants across three separate climate zones, with computer-controlled vents doing the work a small army of gardeners once did.
- Battleston Hill — a woodland garden of winding paths, rhododendrons and sculpture that’s at its best in May, though it earns its keep all year.
- The Rock Garden and Pinetum — a dramatic Edwardian rock garden alongside century-old conifers — the kind of scale a domestic garden simply can’t attempt, which is rather the point of visiting.
- The trial fields — less photogenic, more useful: this is where the RHS actually tests which cultivars perform, the results of which end up in its plant recommendations.
The history in brief
George Fergusson Wilson began an experimental garden at Wisley in the 1870s, trying to grow difficult plants well rather than easy plants adequately. The Royal Horticultural Society took on the site in 1903, and what was originally around 60 acres of garden and wooded farmland has grown over more than a century into the 240-acre garden visitors see today.
RHS membership
Entry to RHS Garden Wisley is free with RHS membership, along with the RHS’s four other gardens and free or discounted entry to 241 partner gardens across the UK. If you’d visit more than one or two RHS gardens a year, membership usually pays for itself on entry fees alone — and RHS membership currently has 30% off for new members (12 months for the price of 8), until 6 September 2026.
Practical visiting
RHS Garden Wisley is open most days of the year, with shorter hours over winter and closures on Christmas Day; book ahead in the school holidays and on RHS Members’ free days, when the car park fills early. There’s a café and plant centre on site. Current opening times, admission prices and any special events are worth checking on the RHS website before you set off — correct as of 16 August 2026, but these things do change with the season.
