RSPB Minsmere is one of Britain’s most-decorated nature reserves — the home of the avocet (the RSPB logo bird), four pairs of breeding bitterns most years, and the original Springwatch base before the BBC moved on. The reserve sits in 2,200 acres of reedbeds, lagoons, heath and ancient woodland between Westleton and Dunwich Heath. Five hides watch over the lagoons; nine miles of trails connect them.

What to expect on a family visit
A full day if you take it slowly. The Coast Trail (3 miles, flat) covers the headline lagoons and the best hides. The visitor centre has binocular hire, a café, and family activity packs free for children. Best months are April–June for breeding birds, September–November for migration. Wheelchair and pushchair routes marked on the trail map.
