Sandringham House is the private country retreat of the King and Queen — 20,000 acres of West Norfolk parkland, woodland, gardens, the church of St Mary Magdalene, and the early-Victorian house itself. The Royal Parkland and play areas are open and free all year (with paid parking); the House and Gardens open seasonally from late March to early October. It works equally well for a quick parkland walk and ice-cream stop, or a full day combining the House tour with the gardens and museum.

What to expect on a family visit
Allow a half-day for the Royal Parkland alone (woodland trails, the children’s play area, the courtyard food stops) and a full day if you include the House and Gardens. The visitor centre courtyard has cafés, shops and the toilets — and is open year-round. Pre-booking House tickets online is strongly recommended in the school summer holidays. The estate is dog-friendly outdoors but dogs aren’t allowed inside the formal Gardens or the House.
