Snape Maltings is the converted Victorian malthouse complex on the river Alde — Benjamin Britten turned the buildings into one of Europe’s leading classical-music venues, the Aldeburgh Festival’s main stage. Outside concert season the site is a properly good day out in its own right: independent shops in the malthouse buildings, riverside walks across the marshes, sculpture in the grounds, three places to eat, and (in summer) river-trip boats from the quay.

What to expect on a family visit
A relaxed half-day. The site is open daily and free to enter outside concert times. The riverside walk to Iken church (about 4 miles round trip) is the classic — flat, marsh views, dragonflies in summer. Properly good independent shopping (kitchenware, clothing, books). Café, restaurant and pub all on site.
