Trengwainton is a smaller, gentler counterpart to Glendurgan — a sheltered Cornish garden inland from Penzance, on rising ground that looks south towards Mounts Bay and St Michael’s Mount on a clear day. The original walled garden is one of the few in England built to a design dictated by the angle of the sun (the beds slope south at a precise 11° to maximise sun-catching). Magnolias and rhododendrons are the headline planting; spring is the peak season.

What to expect on a family visit
Two hours is plenty. The garden has gentle slopes throughout — much more pushchair-friendly than Glendurgan. The walled-garden compartments make a natural game for younger children to explore. Best March to May for the rhododendrons and magnolias; the bamboo grove and stream garden carry the rest of the year. NT café and shop on site.
