Woodbridge sits at the head of the Deben estuary — a working market town with a Saturday market, a 12th-century church, a tide mill that still grinds flour twice a day, and a riverside walk that takes in the boatyards on the way out to Sutton Hoo. It’s the practical base for visiting the Anglo-Saxon burial grounds across the river, and a quietly excellent town in its own right for a half-day.
Main things to see and do
- Woodbridge Tide Mill. One of only two working tide mills in the UK. Grinds flour on each high tide; check the website for the day’s grinding window. Small museum and shop; flour for sale.
- Riverside walk to the Deben quayside. Flat, pushchair-friendly walk along the river past the boatyards. End at the Whisstocks Boatyard café for lunch.
- Woodbridge Saturday market. Saturday morning on Market Hill — produce, baking, Suffolk cheese. The town’s social anchor.
- Sutton Hoo. Across the river — see the dedicated post. Combined ticket with the Tide Mill is sometimes available.
- St Mary’s parish church. Tower built from local septaria (the soft local stone) — climb on open days for the estuary view.
Where to stay
