Literary Festivals UK 2026–27: The Literary Year

Books & Radio 4Updated 10 October 2026

The Literary Year 2026–27 Book and literary festivals in the UK and Ireland, month by month

This calendar lists 250 book and literary festivals in the UK and Ireland, from Hay, Edinburgh and Cheltenham to village weekends run by the local bookshop. October is the busiest month, with 63, among them Cheltenham, first held in 1949 and the oldest festival here.

Compiled by Linda Garrould. Dates come from each festival’s own website or its organiser’s page wherever possible; where we relied on a listing or a local paper, the entry says so. A companion to our monthly guide to books on BBC Radio 4.

Most of these festivals are small, run by volunteers or a bookshop, and name their dates only a few months ahead: as of 10 October 2026, 135 have yet to announce them. For those we give the usual timing and when each was last held, and add the dates as organisers confirm them. The calendar runs from October 2026 to September 2027 and covers England, Scotland, Wales and both parts of Ireland.

Which is the oldest literary festival in the UK?

Cheltenham Literature Festival, first held in 1949, describes itself as the world’s longest-running literature festival. In Ireland, Listowel Writers’ Week, first held in 1971, bills itself as the country’s oldest literary and arts festival.

Which month has the most literary festivals?

October, by some distance: 63 of the 250 festivals here, among them Cheltenham, Henley, Ilkley and Manchester. June (37) and September (33) come next; December and January have none.

Are there literary festivals for children?

Yes: 113 of the festivals here have family events, and several are entirely for young readers, among them the Bath Children’s Literature Festival and the London Children’s Literature Festival in Barnes. Choose “family” in the finder at the top of the page.

Corrections and additions. If you run a festival we have missed, or have spotted a date that has moved, tell us and we will put it right.

What counts. A recurring festival whose programme is mainly books, writing, poetry or storytelling, held in 2025 or 2026. Single-evening events, book fairs and writing courses are left out, as are festivals that seem to have stopped.

How the dates are checked. Dates were read from each festival’s own website or its organiser’s page wherever they were published there, and last checked on 10 October 2026. Where we relied on a listing, a local paper or a ticketing page, the entry names it.

More for readers. What Radio 4 is reading: Book of the Week, Book at Bedtime and A Good Read, month by month.
